Griffith's Valuation (Ireland)

Thanks for the link. With a bit of searching of the maps I was able to find the land that later became my grandfather's farm and see who was the then tenant and who was the landlord. Interestingly the field pattern had not changed much in the following 100 years and I could easily identify the field...

Images attached to Events

I liked the idea of being able to attach an image to an event and this was one of the reasons I upgraded to Version 4. Maybe I was expecting too much but it doesn't seem to do anything very useful for me. First of all, if I attach an image to an event the image does not show on the multimedia tab of...

Ancestors amp; Descendants Diagram

Peter, Thanks. You are right, this seems to be the standard behaviour. (I still have V3 on my laptop and just fired that up and found it behaved the same. Funny, I never noticed it before and never noticed the 'auto-display siblings branches' check box). The Help information, which you kindly direct...

Ancestors amp; Descendants Diagram

I have just moved up to V4 (Bought the full V4 rather than the upgrade) and have been learning about its new capabilities. I notice a strange behaviour with the Ancestors & Descendants Diagram. It shows the siblings of the diagram root and their descendants. This cannot be right. It doesn't just hap...

1930 US Census free access during Aug 2009

Thanks for this information. I am in the UK and was able to register using the link provided by Jon Axtell and did not have to provide a credit card number. I very quickly found the record for my grandmother's brother who had emigrated to the US in 1905.

Have you tried 'printing' direct to a PDF printer such as PDFCreator. If you install PDFCreator (freeware) as a printer when you 'print' it creates a PDF file.
Having said that I am not sure how useful it will be as with 700 people on it they will only be able to view it a bit at a time on screen.

Another way would be to look at the parish registers for Broadwell and then you can check out the whole of that Family Group Record from LDS.

Florence - a man's name?

My Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names says Florence as a male name did not survive the 17c in England but has continued in use in Ireland. As you say your ancestor came from Ireland then Florence may be correct.

Line Spacing between Sources in Reports

Giving this old thread a bump. Simon promised a fix but it didn't make it into versions 3.1, 3.1.1 or 3.1.2. Has it been overlooked?

Explanation of ';Ceass'; in church Records

Thanks Patrick. It seems that 'cess' is a more common spelling and the church cess was a tax for the upkeep of the church buildings.

Explanation of ';Ceass'; in church Records

I have come across names of ancestors in churchwardens' accounts of the 17c where the names appear in the 'Ceass' (sometimes spelled 'Cease'). This appears to be a collection of some sort as in 'Receved by one cease made the Xth of Feabruarye 1617 by the greater part of the p’ishe the sum of xxiiii ...

Help with an Irish place name anyone?

It is Kings County. It is now called Offaly. (After independence the Irish couldn't possibly have a county called Kings County!)

Testing New Version of Gedcom Census

Nick,
I would be willing to do test drive for you. I have used Version 5.1 before. As it happens I have some census data from the Irish 1911 census to enter so that might make a useful test.

Help needed to decipher name

I think it starts with Tam... (looking at how the 'a' is written in bap.) so, referring to my dictionary of English Christian Names I think, as Nick suggested, that it is a variation of Tamasine - maybe Tamasane.

Automatic Repository in new source

I use the repository  field very rarely and then only for unique documents I have found that are likley to exist in only one location. For example I have found the service record of an ancestor who served in the navy in the early 19C so I have recorded the National Archives at Kew as the repository ...

There is a Blockley near Moreton-in-Marsh and a Mickleton about 5 or 6 miles north of Blockley. Both now in Gloucestershire but may have been in Worcestershire.

My condolences on the Jones problem [smile] I had always assumed these 'male' and 'female' entries with no first name referred to children who were born alive but died very soon afterwards. It will be interesting to see what the Birth Certificate says but I wonder how you will know it is your 2XGrea...

I think Calico Pie should clarify the situation regarding Windows Vista and the various versions of FH. Maybe when Simon next visits here he could add to this post so everybody can see it. It says on the Family Historian website that FH version 3 is compatible with Vista. I have version 3 but I have...

Version 3 brought in a method to handle this. Duplicate branches can be suppressed and linking ribbons are used to connect the individuals (or families) that are the source of the duplication.

I have a version 2.07 disk and a Version 3 upgrade disk. I expect to move to Windows Vista on a new computer some time next year. If 2.0 disks cannot be used with Windows Vista does this mean I will not be able to have FH on my new computer? [frown]
