Hardware installation issue

Hi,

I'm using a USB connected modem. I have 4 separate USB ports so tried a different one for the printer than previously.

Re-installation seems fine now. I searched for and downloaded updates straight after installation.

Many thanks

Hardware installation issue

Hi, I bought and installed an HP Deskjet F2280 All-in-One printer, scanner & copier Friday evening and everything seemed fine. However, I was unable to log on to Firefox or IE yesterday (Saturday). I checked my internet connection and cables etc., and all seemed OK. Finally I uninstalled the hardwar...

Downloading queries etc on Vista

Hi,

I have recently acquired a new pc with Vista installed. Can anyone kindly  advise where I should save any queries etc downloaded from FHUG, so that FH can utilise them?

Many thanks

Surname Spelling

Very interesting topic. My GG Grandfather Stephen Wellbelove has been recorded variously (amongst others): Chr:  Welbelove Mar:  Wellbeluft Bur:  Wellbelove There are various other variations for relatives down the centuries; some transcription errors, others because relatives couldn't read or write...

Unreliable secondary source material

A fellow 'Wellbelove' researcher found 17 variations of our surname on an 1891 census website - mostly transcription errors. The worrying thing is there were probably many more!!!

Help identifying date of photo

Another Possibility Both sets of G Grandparents were called George and Sarah. However, my maternal set were born later in 1871. That would date the photo more like the 1930s or later - like your photo Jane. Also the other Sarah had an accident and shuffled around on sticks, so that might explain the...

Help identifying date of photo

Well my GG Gran Jemima lived to 93 - (c1813-1905), but that would make her 42 years older than my g Granddad. Baffling!
My GG Granddad was Stephen (1810-1893), but this photo is probably too late for that.

Help identifying date of photo

Thanks again,

My G grandparents were born 1854 & 1855. Sarah my G gran died in 1919 aged 64. The lady in the picture looks older to me, but then again times were hard then & no doubt took their toll

Unreliable secondary source material

Good point! However, unreliable and misleading as secondary source material can be, other peoples previous research has saved me months possibly years of my own (especially at the beginning) and also who's to say we don't mis-transcribe ourselves, or just can't decipher the records. I personally try...

Help identifying date of photo

Hi I recently acquired a photo of either my paternal great grandparents, or gg grandparents - as yet can't be certain which. Any suggestions as to approximate  date of photo and age of couple would be most helpful in determining which set. Thanks Alan [smile] http://www.fhug.org.uk/images/uploads/Ge...

Printing photos

Hi I want to print old black & white photos to send to relatives. Can anybody suggest the best paper to use? Also my new printer Canon ip 1200 comes with just a colour ink cartridge. There is an option to add a black ink cartridge. However, I have searched the manual and online help, etc, but can't ...

showing married name

Hi, When creating census entries, the wives appear with their maiden name. Is there an easy way round this? Also when creating a new entry, is it best to make two separate records when there is more than one family in a residence - i.e. should I create one record for my g grandfather and his family ...

Hiding living relatives

Hi

Thanks for the reply. If I set the flag for say 100 years, and I export the Gedcom to another program. Will this work ok?

Hiding living relatives

Hi,

Is there a simple way to hide living relatives, but not hide dead relatives without a death date entered.

Is it possible to enter a code on the lines of 'death date unknown' rather than creating queries or saving various versions of chart.

Thanks
Alan

Early Census Release Petition

hi,

there was a recent petition to get the 1911 census released early, but apparently the government refused to release it before 2012.

maybe the tory party will put it in their manifesto - sure to be a vote winner, especially as they're reluctant to cut taxes.

'Touching up' old documents

Hi, I wondered if any body had tips about 'touching up' old documents. Most genealogy books show copies from old parish registers which look as clear as the day they were written. I have tried improving the quality of the grey background of many of mine, but haven't found a quick or satisfactory met...

Cause of death - 'Dentition Fits'

Hi, I relative of mine died around 1850 at a few months old (I'm at work & don't have the certificate with me). However the cause of death is shown as 'Dentition Fits'. I have searched and asked around but cannot find what this means. Cannot find any mention in the online medical references. Can any...

FH v other software

Hi, I was wondering how FH compared to other software. I read a recent review of various family tree software packages which only ranked FH at number 6!!! I know reviewers aren't always 'objective', but 6 seemed a bit low. I think the reviewer felt that there were other packages which were cheaper, ...

No GRO death reference

Hi, I have been trying to trace the GRO death record of my great-great-grandmother Jemima Wellbelove. I estimate she died in the late 1890's in her 80's. She is recorded on the 1891 census and the Egham rate books until around 1896. There is no reference in the 1901 census and I couldn't see her lis...
