Re: What's the accepted wisdom on recording copious notes...
David, great idea, I love it. As it happens I keep most of the extra papers/documents and what have you in family name folders seperate to Family Historian anyway. I was trying to amalgamate all of the stuff into Family Historian as I am paranoid about losing data and have numerous data backups all ...

Re: What's the accepted wisdom on recording copious notes...
MIke, Many thanks for the prompt response. Some good food for thought there. The sort of documents I am alluding to are, notes from Stirnet files, portions of Wikipedia articles and/or sections of large books (for example, a number of pages from the 'History of the Markhams' - a tome way too large t...

What's the accepted wisdom on recording copious notes...
I am coming across copious notes relating to a number of my ancestors and was wondering what the accepted wisdom was for recording same ? I had thought of perhaps just linking to pdf's but it doesn't seem very elegant. Cutting/pasting will of course work but again, not as elegant as I would like. Ag...

Finding records with PLACES
I'm sure there must be an easy way to do this but I'm going round in circles trying to find it! In the list of PLACE records one of the fields says 'Links'. I am assuming that '0' in this field means the PLACE is not used but if there is a number there then how do I find the record(s) with that PLAC...

Version 5 - Strange 1st time load
Just downloaded V5 and installed fine. Loaded my main project and was told about 20-30 errors in file which were flagged as 'info only'. Had a good look at the file but couldn't see any particular problems. Reloaded and all now seems as normal. The error message apparently refers to errors in the fi...

Protocol for possible Wife
Many thanks for the responses. It is complicated by the fact that there is probably no real prospect of finding out the truth as this is back in the 11th century. I am (allegedly) related to a lady who has a generally recognised father but there is doubt about her mother, with two possibles named. I...

I have a few records where there is conflicting evidence relating to somebodys' wife. One source says it is 'x' another says' it is 'y'. Until I discover which one is correct (which might be never) I want to record the conflict. Can anybody tell what is the normal protocol for doing this, please? ID...

What is the general consensus for entering details of somebody who has a title eg 'Sir' Do you put the 'Sir' before or after the name or not all?

An update for anybody who has to undertake the same task. This seems to have gone fairly well. I did have some issues with badly worded sources in that they were the same sources but worded differently in two different projects. I'm afraid I cheated a bit here by loading the gedcom up into a text ed...

Sorry, I should have been clearer in my earlier message. I did do a trial merge and it intends to create new sources for the 1841 census, 1851 census etc. etc. I can live with it if there is no alternative but it would be nice to tidy up the rough edges by having one source for 1841, 1851 and so on.

OK, I've had a good look around and made copies of everything. I've checked both files individually, there are a couple of anomalies which I have sorted but the main area for change would appear to be sources. In one file I have cenususes (censii?) listed as Census 1841, Census 1851 and so on but in...

Many thanks for the prompt response. In answer to your question, I have both trees as projects and many backup copies of the relevant gedcoms.I am assuming I just (!) open one of the projects and then merge in the relevant gedcom from the other project.
Thanks again for you response.

I've just discovered that my Mother is related to my Father ! which means that 360 records will be duplicated if I keep both trees separate. What is the 'etiquette' regarding such situations? Should I keep two trees or merge into one and, if I do the merge is it reasonably safe (I do, of course keep...

Right, well I've now bought this and I'm starting to wish I hadn't. Can anybody explain to me how I move a box in a diagram please ? The scenario is that I have made a diagram of ancestors, the root of the diagram sits at the top of the diagram (straddling a page break) and no attempts have been suc...

Jane, thanks for the prompt reply. That wasn't really what I was getting at. What I wanted to do was move a section of the diagram over to one side thus allowing a print on smaller paper. The system didn't seem to want to let me do this and, in one particular part of the diagram it wouldn't move any...

Hi, prospective buyer here who has been playing with a demo version. I've noticed that moving parts of diagrams around does not seem as intuitive as I thought. Some other programs allow you to grab a box and drag it anywhere on the diagram but FH doesn't seem to allow this. In particular, I built an...
