Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
As I see it, if I find a match on Ancestry to someone on my online tree with them, I get the option to save the record including the census image and source. Then when the same Tree is opened in FTM the Trees will automatically sync with TreeSync (or else it tells you a Sync is required). To use Tre...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software
For many users Ancestry has made family history "too easy", and to some extent taken some of the fun and satisfaction out of finding a new discovery. What with hints, that get accepted, and then downloaded to our computers when we next open FTM. Speaking for my own tree, it has jumped to over 2000 p...

Re: Problems getting information from relatives!
Have you thought of the telephone? If you have already sent the pictures etc. you have the 'excuse' to give them a call and ask if they have any answers. I was recently given an address of a very distant relative by a cousin. I wrote her a letter asking for family history on her side, and gave my em...

Re: Captions for photos and images
I'm pleased to say I have managed my first attempt at adding text to an image. Only took me two hours! In the end I used Photoshop Elements and the option to "Resize - Canvas Size". While searching Google I came across the website below and followed the instructions for "Visible Captions". It is by ...

Re: Captions for photos and images
Thank you for all your suggestions. I have downloaded Irfanview and will have a go at trying it out over the weekend, although as you say it looks like it has many options, some of which look a little complicated! I have also followed the advice to search Google for help in Adobe Elements. It would ...

Captions for photos and images
Does anyone know a way that I can add a caption (box maybe) to the bottom of a photo? Something like "John, Jane & baby John - Margate 1878" - and if I did manage a caption, would it still be visible in FTM (I currently have V5). I have Photoshop elements that I use for very basic cropping etc. or i...

Re: Family Historian 6 - 9th December
I would just like to ask a question about the 'upgrade' version of Family Historian 6. I purchased the full copy of FH 3 and then upgraded to versions 4 and 5 and hopefully now version 6. Does FH enable further 'upgrades' only without purchasing the full program version again. I recently managed to ...

Thank very much you for your help Jane and Mike. I would be more than happy if I could manage to produce something half as good as you!

Re: Digital Photo Album Software?
Hello I suppose I was thinking in the line of PDF format that could be seen on pc/tablet or printed for an older relative that doesn't have such devices. One of my Victorian albums must be approaching a hundred years old now. It has about forty photo's. Some are single photo's in one page, some four...

Digital Photo Album Software?
Hello Does anyone know if there is a software program that could be used to make a 'Victorian' type album that can be viewed by others. I expect one could be made in PowerPoint, but I have never got to grips with that! I have quite a large number of old family photo's (which I know I am lucky to hav...

Royal Engineers (WWII)
Hi Graham
Thanks for the info.
I have the transcript of my grandfathers war diary from 18th August 1914 - 13th February 1915, when he returned to UK sick.
I have been unable for find anything else of his war record. In WWII he was a Major in the Home Guard.

Royal Engineers (WWII)
My Grandfather was in the Royal Engineers in WWI (One).
Do you know if there was a diary for then, and do you have to get a different CD for certain years? I looked on the website, but couldn't see where I could purchase these.
Thank you

British Newspaper Archives
I recently spent £6.95 on a two day pass on The British Newspaper Archives Website. This game me 500 credits and I was pushed to use them all in the time allowed. I found a great range of information of my family that I would never have known - Births, Marriages & Deaths of family members, including...

R101 disaster in 1930
Hello My Gt Gt Uncle was a pioneer in the history of flight. His name was Griffith Brewer. His daughter married Capt George Meager, who was a pilot on the R100 (sister ship). As a child I can remember hearing stories of the R101 crash, but of course as a child I took no notice - Its only now I wish ...

Creating a Multimedia Object from a multi-page Doc
I had a 'leaflet' that was a transcript of a speech that one of my ancestors had given. I took a photo of each page (or two on a double page) with a digital camera. At the end I had around eight inages in JPEG format, which I could link. These can also be read with Windows Photo reader which I can z...

I too am getting started entering sources into my tree using AS. I would recommend spending a little time watching the Video Tutorials. It seems a lot clearer when you see something done. I found the Census entries so much easier. I watched the video several times - the 'edit information' is somethi...

Time to Spring Clean and De-Clutter?
Hello
Thank you for explaining the FH v5 Backups.
That sounds very good advise, which I think I shall adopt. I will definately try to manage the backup folder, so I don't end up with too many backups.

Time to Spring Clean and De-Clutter?
Do other users have my problem? I have 'backed up and copied' files time and time again, scared of losing information. I now have an external hard disk full and well as my pc. I also have a large wooden trunk full of paper information I have gathered. I think the availability of larger discs, flash ...
