Re: Speculative Link
Only if I had a specific problem that I could not solve myself would I consider looking at "plugins" or asking for help. This was what I did for "speculative links" and this forum provided what is a good solution for me. As it happens I am wondering if I need to look into whether I could display the...

Re: Speculative Link
Mike, I am just noting what I do, I am not suggesting others should follow my example!! I don't use plugins (I am not even sure I know what they are). Yes, I guess I do use FH transactions that update multiple records, but you have to trust something. I did however run into problems when using FH to...

Re: Speculative Link
Maybe I used the wrong choice of words, and maybe (also) I don't really understand Ancestral Sources. But I didn't like the idea of its updating a number of records with one transaction. I preferred doing them one at a time, manually, but accept this could increase the chance of errors.

Re: Speculative Link
In reply to Wilfreda99:- a) The example I posted was a trial based on using a new attribute "PARENTAGE SPECULATED", but I have now switched to using a Birth Note. I'll attach a pdf using the new approach. (I have used capitals to try to ensue it stands out, even (possibly) when exported as a .ged fi...

Re: Speculative Link
Many thanks "Tatewise" for your help. The distinction between NOTE and NOTE2 had escaped me, and has caused me considerable confusion! It is all much clearer now. And your suggested syntax for an expression to cover multiple Birth Notes works perfectly. I am very grateful

Re: Speculative Link
I have decided to "improve" my solution, and have run into a problem! Possibly some one can advise. I decided to try triggering my "speculated" box style by using a Birth Note (rather than a new attribute), as this seems more logical and will display in a manner that I find more appealing. I have se...

Re: Speculative Link
Yes, I realise "Notes" can exist in many places, but I don't understand your comment that only one instance of an Individual or Family note can be created. I have created a number of notes for a single (test) individual, all display on the diagram, and each is separately listed in the .ged file. It ...

Re: Speculative Link
I think I am making a little progress. I am trying to avoid "Notes" as I suspect the possibility of having multiple notes for an individual, and the Speculative Note being not necessarily in a predefined position (eg not always being a NOTE1), could cause problems, at least for me. Instead I am tryi...

Re: Speculative Link
Many thanks.
I'll experiment with your comprehensive instructions in a test database so as I can understand what I am doing. I'll let you know how I get on, but it may not be until the New Year, as I will be away over Christmas.

Re: Speculative Link
I suspect I need more than a "refresher", which would suggest I already have, or I had, a certain level of expertise!
However can you tell me, or point me in the necessary direction, how I go about setting up a Parents Note = %INDI.FAMC[1].NOTE2% record?
Thanks

Re: Speculative Link
I need to refresh my memory on using field names like %INDI.FAMC[1].NOTE2% ! I have only dappled with such field names in the past, and then only occasionally, so I have to "relearn" every time. I think, on reflection, I need to set up a standard parent/child link, then flag that the child's link to...

Re: Speculative Link
I'll need to mull over the "text scheme" idea, as I do want something that displays on the diagram. And I guess it would only be necessary to display a suspect link in one direction - either for the parent having a suspect child, or a child having a suspect father, but not both. I smiled at the ment...

Re: Speculative Link
Thanks for the suggestions, though I don't think they provide what I am looking for. Essentially, I am looking for the ability to add an attribute to a link, not to an individual. Even being able to display a specific link differently - different colour, or as a dotted line - would suffice, but, as ...

Speculative Link
What is the best way of recording a "speculative link" - eg of recording someone as being a possible child of someone else? I would like some way of recording this and displaying the link as being speculative. Then, if further evidence emerges that the link is correct, then a way of converting it to...

Expansion Buttons
I've been in communication with Family History Support and they have now diagnosed that my problem is caused by an obscure bug, and this will be fixed in the forthcoming 5.0.1.
Meanwhile, the workaround is to untick the 'Check for duplicates' box in the Diagram Options menu.

I generally use the button, but have just tried the menu route and have the same problem. I also tried setting the Installation default as you suggested but again nothing changed. By the way, the diagram has just over 1000 boxes (and a few fewer names, which I don't understand). Possibly I'm experie...

The Expansion Buttons display, but you have to click on each of them to display the relevant descendants' boxes. I had expected, and I thought used to happen, that with Generations Up and Generations Down both set to All, that all relatives would be displayed, without Expansion Buttons being display...

Yes, I have 'ALL' set for the correct diagram type, and, in fact, I currently have 'ALL' set for all diagram types. What I find especially confusing is that I thought it used to work the way I think it should be working, and, I feel that something has changed, but so far I've failed to work out what...

Expansion Buttons
I had assumed that if I set both 'Generations Up' and 'Generations Down' to ALL in Diagram Preferences, I would then get the entire diagram, without any expansion buttons, but this does not appear to be the case in the 'All Relatives' diagram. I think I must be missing something and if anyone can en...

Merging 2 ged files
I didn't actually check the other tabs - would this actually cause a crash? (I accept that had the merge worked, some of my data would have got screwed up.) I actually have now tried merging two test versions of my files. I accepted all the suggestions, merged, got the merge report, than a crash. Th...

Merging 2 ged files
I have 2 ged files, both created in FH, that I want to merge. Each has around 1000 records and there is significant overlap of people across the two files. This morning I used the Merge feature of FH4 and after 4 hours of editing the suggestions I proceeded with the actual merge. This appeared to go...
