Problem with Place export to TNG

Hi All I have recently rearranged the 2000+ places in my gedcom from 5 field, left justified, no padding to 5 field, right justified with padding. I have the Export Gedcom plugin set to TNG, all options default except for media, set to WIPE. Looking at the resulting gedcom it seems to have converted...

Re: Map Window

..., the geocoding service which FH is using tends to place unrecognised UK place names in the approximate centre of the county if one is given. Derek happens with countries too - I have one entry simply as "Denmark". As the mapping includes Greenland as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it reckons t...

Re: FH6 First Impressions

It is easy enough to edit the pointers, I had some for the Channel Islands in the middle of the English Channel. It is indeed - was a bit miffed when it placed Liverpool about 25 miles to the north  Am now working my way through nearly 2000 placenames (including churches, which I DO treat as...

I think you will find TNG is only available via the developer's website. I use it myself and as Jane says it is the way to go for large databases. As an alternative (and free!) there is Webtrees, which seems to be gaining a following, the successor to phpGedView. Again it is PHP/mySQL driven. Opinio...

definitely something odd going on with the pools; I would normally expect about 5 pools, to mop up the few 'persons/families of interest but not related'. Now I see that I have 836 pools. Pool 836 is genuinely not related, but 835 is a family of 5th cousins. Most of the other pools are 5th cousin an...

Funny Stories  - Help Wanted

From the 1911 Census A cousin of mine, James Halsall, and his wife Amy, were living with a 71 year old widow, Elizabeth Hardie, and her companion. James was a chauffeur, Amy a helper in the household. I think Amy filled in the form, she certainly signed on behalf of Elizabeth, who then dictated the ...

Where am I going right?[wink]

I've had this error occasionally when copying & pasting long occupations from 1911 census transcriptions (at least I think that's what triggers it) Can't pinpoint the exact moment the message is triggered however

Place of Marriage or Baptism

I recently moved the other way - I switched all the churches / cemeteries into the PLACE fields. The reason being that I upload to TNG and can then tag the places in Google Earth so that you can zoom in to the church itself rather than the middle of the town or village.

1911 - display of facts

I can't remember now what the default position is, but go to: Census >Census Template Editor then select the 1911 UK census, highlight the 'Completed years...' item in the left hand column. This opens up a dropdown box labelled 'Recording'. From the options select 'Append to census event local note'...

Place of Marriage

I started off putting the church into the address line. However as I now upload to a TNG website which has Google Maps geotaggging functionality I have switched to putting the church name as part of the place. I'm not entirely happy with this method, but I can't see another easy way of doing it

Marriage to 2 sisters

Going slightly off topic now, but Jane's comment about her husband's family reminds me that I have 2 brothers marrying a (widowed) mother & her daughter in my tree. Is it something about Liverpool? [wink]

Irfanview will certainly convert .djvu files (make sure you have the installation including all plugins). It will also convert pdf files if you additionally install a programme called 'ghostscript', which is referred to in the Irfanview FAQ. I've just tried it and it works If you have Paintshop Pro ...

Jon - yes it rebuilds EVERY time, so if you close between sessions (which I tend to do) you go through it all again. Once the thumnails have been created (abt 15 mins on my machine) everything is fine, no scrolling delay or anythig It does not preclude any other work, but does make things a bit jerk...

I'm not surprised - you've got just a tad more processing power there than I have[cry]. It's not actually HD activity but cpu load that is the problem.
Shame it can't make use of the thumbs.db file already in the media directories.
