Re: Rules of engagement

I moved it since it was a rehash of an earlier post by JSPhilips which I could not see was adding anything to the forums, especially as Simon had clearly stated in a recent announcement the state of play for V7. Since you seem to think this is a problem I have moved it back and locked it. I have hos...

Re: Charting programs

If you are looking mainly for Ancestor trees you could simply draw one in FH using text boxes and use the data link options to fill in the boxes as required. As Ancestor trees are a fixed format (i.e 1 child 2 parents) it would work similar to the Fan chart. There is a sample Ancestor chart which us...

Wanted: Family Historian Beta Testers for Version 7

Posted by Simon Orde on the Groups IO List Wanted: Family Historian Beta Testers for Version 7 Family Historian 7 has been in beta testing for some time now. The current beta testers are doing a great job and it's all going very well. We now want to increase the numbers and extend our pool of beta t...

I think it's a character position. If you open in an editor like PSPAD there is a go to by character.

Re: Optional Parents

There are several ways to handle this you can set up two sets of parents which I suspect is what you have done so far. Personally I have a custom event which I use with Possible Parents to link in parents I am not sure about so neither is shown as the definitive. You can still research and record bo...

I suspect you are using the Export plug in rather than the built in export? If so can you confirm exactly what settings you have used so Mike can help you with his plugin.

Re: On line video as media exhibit?

If you have the media locally then you can add it using Add Media. Personally I always download video from the web if it is important to me, but if you don't want to do this, you could always add a "graphic" for the media record and put the url in the media note. It won't be a live link in V6, but i...

Re: Using "Find Record" Icon

I don't think so, the Find option is a string search, i.e. it searches for the specific string. The Filter on the Records Window list splits the name into two fields so it is better for searching for names.

Re: Examination 30-day Free Trial copy

With the mapping, if you have imported a large tree it will take a while to do the geocoding and if you don't have full place names they probably won't geocode correctly. So if you just enter Boston you will probably get the one in the US.

As Mike says more details of your issue would help.

Re: Marriage Witnesses

According to the AS Help Witness Role: The witness role was first introduced in version 6 of Family Historian specifically as a method to associate individuals with a fact. Therefore this is almost certainly the best method to use if you have Family Historian 6 and is the default scheme used in Ance...

Re: Pictures

"embedded" pictures in V2/V3/V4 meant that the data was stored in the Gedcom file. I think you are confusing pictures being the Project folder with Embedded. There is no problem with having quite large numbers on images attached to a Project, if you have a few thousand images it's worth turning off ...

You can also use the More button to add it to the tools menu to have qui...

Re: Diagrams

I have never seen a Waterfall for Ancestors, you can do descendant waterfalls, by using keep near parents on a right left diagram for the oldest child in each generation, but I am not sure how clear an ancestor one would be unless you don't follow all lines.

Another way is to create a Query adding all the Ancestors of those attending, then use the Query to mark all the boxes and then invert and hide the rest as Mike has already explained.

Have you considered using Family Historian? You can attach any files you like to a Media record add notes to them and use Source records to group them together. Media records can have keywords attached as well. You can have a separate Project file for all those "Miscellaneous" documents that don't h...

Re: Property Box - multiple instances in tabs?

I doubt multiple property boxes would be possible without a radical redesign as they are entry points not something to view. Personally I use diagrams and named lists along with Query result sets when working with disparate people. Have you experimented with diagrams or charts as a home, you could a...

Re: reordering the Pool

Renumbering a Gedcom is better done using the Record Identifier tool, but it still does not guarantee the pool numbers will stay in that order and when you save your Gedcom if you are not changing the record IDs they will go back into number order.
