Font is changed when saving chart as pdf

Post by susiewb »

In creating diagrams, I have used Lucida Calligraphy and Harrington fonts for headings in text boxes however when I save the charts as pdfs, the fonts are changed. The body of the diagram is unchanged.
Can someone help, please? I have spent many hours on the design!
Thanks

I have experimented with various fonts in Text Boxes, including Lucida Calligraphy and Harrington, but cannot reproduce the symptoms you describe. I have used both Diagrams and Saved Charts.

Have those fonts only just been installed or have they been on PC for some time?

What version of Windows?
What PDF viewer?

Having used Diagram > Save Diagram As > PDF File (.pdf) what settings do you choose.
When FH/PDF has finished, the PDF viewer should open the saved PDF automatically - does it?

Can you post some screenshots of the Diagram in FH, and in the PDF viewer.

Thanks for your time, Mike. I have answered my own problem in that if I choose my Nitro pdf writer as the printer as opposed to the Family Historian pdf printer, then all seems to be OK.

I wonder if there is an issue with the Family Historian PDF (novaPDF…printer) installation, especially as I suspect you have upgraded through several versions of FH that have installed different versions of Family Historian PDF printer.

Use Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall every Family Historian PDF (novaPDF…printer), then re-install the latest version of Family Historian.

I'm afraid my query derived from a lack of knowledge as to how to create a pdf in FH. I have now used the FH pdf creator, chosen the Custom page size and embedded the fonts used. The pdf of the large chart that is created is exactly as it should be.

I should point out for the benefit of anyone else with the same problem that I could not find any information about embedding fonts, page sizing etc when creating pdfs in Getting the Most from FH Version 6, nor in any help menus.

Sometimes we just learn by trial and error - and a bit of help from Google!

Thanks again.

Susie, I do not understand what you did before, nor what you are doing now.
Please give specific commands or attach screen-shots.

There should be no need to 'embed fonts'. My experiments on two PC needed no such adjustments.

Are you using the Diagram > Save Diagram As > PDF File (.pdf) command?

What settings are you then choosing thereafter?

How does this differ from what you did that caused the problem?

how_to:creating_a_single_page_pdf_of_a_diagram|> Single Page PDF of a Diagram has advice under Set Print Properties. Is that what you used to adjust the Page and Fonts tab?

The process I followed was this:
Open Saved Chart - Save as pdf - choose option to Adjust to fit on One Page
Choose FH PDF creator - choose Properties

The charts have now been produced satisfactorily. Thank you for your help.

Embedding fonts:
The good - you can use a large variety of fonts which are very portable
The bad - can make the files very large.
Try an experiment with a multitude of obscure fonts.

I try to use 'universal/common' fonts without embedding.

If you want to be super sure your PDF document will be portable you can restrict even further to the PDF Standard Type 1 Fonts (Standard 14 Fonts).
For background see the Fonts section here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_ ... rmat#Fonts.

I don't restrict myself to these fourteen, in particular I use Consolas and not Courier for Monospaced type and although I have not done yet, I should probably embed that one font as it is not so universal, but my other font Arial is very universal so that should not need embedding for any destination. However, as you have discovered, if a font is not available it will be substituted, often quite OK, but sometimes not.
